Today’s financial management specialists hold the key to success for the organizations that employ them, with company boards relying on their specialist knowledge to formulate business strategies and provide advice and guidance on risk management and compliance. Our Business & Financial Management specialization is designed to provide a solid foundation of financial knowledge as well as a firm grounding in the broader-based business skills needed for financial management positions such as marketing, economics and human resource management, among many others.
In year two, students are provided with an introduction to financial and managerial accounting and the ways in which finance is managed within a business organization. They will learn to evaluate the different sources of finance, compare the ways in which they are used, and learn to analyse and evaluate financial performance. In addition, they will become familiar with cost structures and explore what it is to collect and analyse cost information within their own businesses. Budgets, too, are an important part of management, and students will practice preparing forecasts and budgets, and learn how to monitor performance against these budgets.
The knowledge gained in the second year will be invaluable in the third year of study, when students set up and run their own company. It also provides the real life practical experience that is essential in future work life.
But finance is also about having the cash to run a business, and, in year three, students learn the financial management skills that will enable them to understand company capital structures and how to estimate the weighted average cost of capital. Broad risk management techniques in a domestic and international financial management context are also studied and the role of the treasury functions within the current commercial environment examined. A number of other cross disciplinary courses will serve to further broaden the student’s management skills.
In year four, the wide selection of modules offered by the University of Westminster provides challenging opportunities for further specialisation. The final project may be realised anywhere in the world, depending on the location of the company offering the final project assignment.
